World Culture

WORLD CULTURES will explore the different lifestyles; their homes, food, traditions and all aspects of their lives that make them unique. 

Members will research a culture to share at a meeting using; books, hold a quiz, a YouTube video, bring a friend who has lived in a foreign country and interview them, PowerPoint presentation, Surprise us!

2023 January hosted by Vernon – Discussed the meaning of culture and the elements that created it.

2022 December hosted by Sandra – Members each brought a Christmas dish from a country of their choice with an appropriate story

2022 November hosted by Gayleen – Anne Cottington a visitor from Grenoble, a city in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, sits at the foot of mountains between the Drac and Isère rivers. It’s known as a base for winter sports, and for its museums, universities and research centres.

2022 October Maureen Medley – Otago an area on the South Island NZ settled by the Scots with an agriculture culture.

1st September Pam Cowley – Solomon Islands Solomon Islands is an island nation that lies east of Papua New Guinea and consists of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands. The main island of Guadalcanal and includes smaller, isolated low atolls. Although Bougainville is the largest island in the Solomon Islands archipelago it is politically an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea and does not form part of the nation of Solomon Islands.

4th August Dianne Boyle – Formosan Indigenous Tribes Formosan or Taiwanese indigenous peoples are a nationally recognized subgroup numbering about 569,000 or 2.38% of the island’s population. Academic research suggests that their ancestors have been living on Taiwan for approximately 6,500 years.

2nd June 2022 Ngaire Kay – Culture of Ladakh a region administered by India which constitutes a part of the larger Kashmir region. Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes

2nd May 2022 Sandra Atherstone – Zulu Nation Zulus are part of the Nguni ethnic group in Southern Africa with an estimated 10–12 million people, living mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. They originated from Nguni communities who took part in the Bantu migrations from the north of Africa over millennia.
